Reimbursable (external) publishing Provide publishing assistance to member countries and cooperating agencies on and as-requested, and charitable basis when time and resources permit. Uncategorised (UC) Activity/Task 2002
Coastal Development and Management - Feasability Study for Causeway Improvements, Majuro Infrastructure development is fast growing thus a need for an engineering study project to be conducted to investigate the opening up of filled in causeway in Majuro to improve circulation of lagoon water. Marshall Islands have not yet been informed officially by SOPAC and would appreciate feedback on the status of the project. Coastal Processes (CP) Activity/Task 1993
Pacific Wastewater Policy and Framework for Action Regional policy and action framework for improving wastewater management adapted to and implemented at national level. Water and Sanitation (WS) Activity/Task 2005
To determine the potential for precious coral occurrences in New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) offshore At the time of this activity, there was nothing known about the presence or absence of precious corals in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) offshore areas. The conditions required for their growth is 200 - 500 metre depths, 0-3 knot currents, and hard sea-bottom conditions with minimal sediment supply - conditions which identified within the offshore areas of Vanuatu. The aim of this activity was therefore to locate beds of precious coral. Minerals (M) Activity/Task 1978
Bathymetric mapping of the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) island arc and the adjacent deep sea floor Bathymetric data had been collected by the Royal Navy, IFP and ORSTOM and therefore this activity was to produce bathymetric maps maps at 1 :500,000 scale, out of these data. In addition, the economic potential of this activity was to provide topographic maps of the sea floor for the preliminary evaluation of mineral distributions and for extrapolation on-land geology adjacent offshore areas. Uncategorised (UC) Activity/Task 1978
Implementation of an Interactive Graphical Ocean Database for CTD and Future ADCP Profile Data An interactive database to support data collection, reduction display, analysis and archiving CTD data was implemented during a workshop in July. As there is archive data from a number of past projects which could be moved over into the database and allow for better data access. A second phase to complete this archiving of old datasets and the inclusion of current data from ADCP and VACM is planned. For Tuvalu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands and Fiji Islands, SOPAC will continue its collaborative project with the Victoria University of Wellington directed at understanding the biological aspects of carbonate sediment budgets. In addition the preparation of a booklet similar to Coasts of Pacific Islands entitled "Pacific Islands and Carbonate Sediments", was planned. Coastal Processes (CP) Activity/Task 1999
Cruise II of Geovan to establish further refraction and reflection work. R. V Coriolis Cruises (C) Activity/Task 1981
Public Education and Awareness To educate the Pacific audience on appropriate or best practices in the sectors within SOPAC’s mandate through products such as press releases, information notes, and special publications/resource materials. Also, to monitor feedback on the use of information produced, compiled and/or distributed by SOPAC. Uncategorised (UC) Activity/Task 2002
Investigation of the suitability of clay deposits for the manufacture of pottery, bricks, or tiles To find clay in the soils of Vanuatu suitable for making pottery or bricks, or tiles on Efate, Santo, Epi and other islands; to assess the quantity and quality of the clay. The investigations were requested of SOPAC due to a recent addition of ash with appreciable contents of silt sized material. Minerals (M) Activity/Task 1980
Sand and Gravel Survey A survey for sand and gravel was carried out in Rarotonga Harbour but volume was not determined. Suitability for aggregate is being studied as well. Aggregates (A) Activity/Task 1980
