Coordination of offshore sea-bed mapping in Kiribati Techsec was requested to ensure that research vessels, particularly those with swath mapping equipment and record swath mapping data while working or transmitting through Kiribati waters. Techsec was also requested to obtain the data for Kiribati and compile it into maps of the seafloor when practical. Area of high seamounts and around islands where living and non-living resources may be found had highest priority. Cruise (C) Mapping 1992
High resolution bathymetric survey in Kiribati This report describes the high-resolution bathymetric mapping survey carried out for Kiribati around Abaiang, Tarawa, Abemama, Banaba and Onotoa. The survey was carried out over a period of six weeks in September and October 2005, resulting in the acquisition of over 900 km of multibeam echosounder (MBES) data. For Tarawa and Abaiang, the survey achieved 100% coverage of the seafloor from approximately 50 m depth in the nearshore area to an average offshore distance of 3 km, reaching water depths of some 1 700 m. Coverage was significantly less in other areas. The activity was carried out under the EDF8/9 Project: Reducing Vulnerability of Pacific ACP States. Fieldwork was undertaken from 14 September to 19 October 2005 and technical report produced in October 2008. Cruise (C) Survey 2005
