Biomass Resource Assessment (cont'd)

Training materials prepared, country assessments completed and in-country training courses completed.

Project OutputUnder a consultancy agreement training materials have been prepared, published and are available, and biomass resource assessments and training have been successfully completed in 6 countries (Fiji, Kiribati, Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu & Vanuatu). Additional in country training has been provided by SOPAC in the Cook Islands. An earlier proposal seeking funding for second phase of the resource assessment for the remaining countries was currently being revised and prior to submitting to the FAO for funding consideration.

CommentsWithin the past 12 months there was a significant increase in interest in biomass and its potential as a fuel source as a result of the increasing cost of fossil fuels within the region. These aspects as further discussed under the relevant sections of the report (coconut oil / ethanol).
